EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
